Michael Schumacher has been awarded the title the most times, having 7 championships to his name, ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio’s 5 titles and Alain Prost’s 4 titles. In addition there have been 5 triple champions and 6 double champions. Overall, 30 different drivers have become World Champions.
Great Britain is currently the most successful nationality in terms of championships, having produced 9 champions who have achieved 13 titles between them. Brazil is next, with 3 drivers sharing 8 titles between them.
The youngest champion is currently Lewis Hamilton, who won the 2008 title at the age of 23, whilst Juan Manuel Fangio claimed the 1957 title at the age of 46 to become the oldest champion.
Jochen Rindt is the only driver in history to have won a championship posthumously, having died in preparation for the 10th round of the 1970 season.
The smallest margin of points between the champion and runner up is currently from the 1984 season, when Niki Lauda claimed the title by just half a point from Alain Prost. The 1958, 1961, 1964, 1976, 1981, 1994, 2007 and 2008 seasons have all been decided by just 1 point.
Stirling Moss has finished Runner Up the most times without winning a championship, claiming second place 4 times.
